The project originated from a conversation with Dwarka's mother who after all these years felt like her life hasn't been of much worth given that she has never earned money and has spent all her life cooking and cleaning at home. For long cooking and cleaning at home, especially in countries like India, has been considered as a thankless job done primarily by women of the house. There is no monetary value attached to it and not even acknowledgement of their contribution to the economy.
This recipe zine is small effort towards acknowledging that contribution and making them feel seen. The fact that people want to buy this zine and enjoy the recipes not just visually but also trying them out at their own homes brings a sense of accomplishment.
The format
The format is inspired by the sketchnote style which transcends the barriers of language and script.
The zine
These are a few pages from the test print done to flesh out any print and binding concerns.
The pleasures of a print can only be felt. Even though this was printed on regular printer paper the feeling of holding this zine in one’s hands and flipping through the pages was such a delight. We can’t wait to complete this project and let people enjoy it for themselves and especially gift it to the person who inspired it all.
